This year's theme is New York, New York, and just like the Sinatra song, you'll want to be a part of it! Here's how you can help right now:

- Volunteer to co-chair an auction category. We have a couple of categories left to fill and we need you! Whether you're an auction veteran or this is your first one, we want your skills and talents on our team.

- Offer to help solicit donations from restaurants in a local neighborhood.

- Purchase a gift card at a restaurant you frequent and donate it to the auction.

- Share any New York contacts you have with the auction co-chairs.

- Mark your calendar for February 25 and plan to attend.

Contact auction co-chairs Kim Bayliss (baylissdc@gmail.com) and Linda Geen (l.geen@verizon.net) to volunteer!

SquashEmpower Scholarship Program

SquashEmpower was established in 2004 to help disadvantaged students reach their potential through the game of squash and academic tuition. SquashEmpower is offering scholarships to Deal students to help achieve their educational goals. Scholarships include learning to play squash and academic tutoring for those who otherwise could not afford to participate in this programming. We are based at Chevy Chase Athletic Club (opp Friendship Hts metro). Thought for the Week

Winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart.

- Victor Hugo

Interim Principal's Message...
albright

I have written a shorter message this week for a shorter week. Winter break is coming this week (as if you didn't already know!) and students will be out of Deal starting Thursday. Both students and teachers are looking forward to this time to refresh and renew - so that they can return to finish up the 2nd advisory in January.

The last week saw myriad activities - our Winter Concert (thanks to the many of you who came, the students who performed, and the teachers who prepared them), the continuation of the Sandwich Marathon, and another Deal open house. This week culminates in a whole-school assembly prepared by the students on our Student Council.

Be sure to allow your children to rest up over the break. The end of the year is important to many faiths, as well as being a generally reflective time. While I know that many of your children will make resolutions for getting straight As, making a sports team, or winning that club trophy, let's try and remind them that the caring and concern they have shown over the last month (Canned Food Drive, Sandwich Marathon, Toys for Tots) can extend throughout the rest of the year as well.

Take care,

Interim Principal Albright

This week at Deal...

Every Day: Work and learning Come to school on time every day this week, ready to learn in every class. Vacation does not begin until 3:15 on Wednesday!

Every Day: Toys for Tots
We are still accepting new, wrapped gifts for the Toys for Tots collection outside the Welcome Center. Let's see if we can fill the three boxes to the brim!
Monday-Wednesday: Sandwich Marathon
After 10 days of making sandwiches everyday and with three to go, Deal students have made almost 2,000 sandwiches for distribution! Here is an email from DC Central Kitchen about your children's work:
"Good Morning, this morning I had a conversation with Jeff Rustin the out reach specialist with First Helping and he explain to me how pleased people are with the bagged lunches being produced at Deal Middle School. Many individuals who have received the lunches are very grateful and appreciative of the hard work and quality of the meals being produced. For some, it allows them to have something to eat between breakfast and dinner. It truly is inspiring to see all the pieces of the puzzle come together to make this happen. From Chef Christina's ground work at Deal to Jonathan at the DCCK helping me unload boxes of bagged lunches every morning it's been great to be a part of."

Monday - Wednesday: Music Department
Attention all band and chour members. There will be no rehearsal from December 19, 2011 through December 21, 2011. We will start rehearsals again on the first day that we return to school in the new year. Enjoy your winter break.

Wednesday: Winter Assembly
The whole school community will gather in the gym to close out 2011 and set the stage for a marvelous 2012. Get ready for our traditional winter assembly...updated with some new twists! Thanks to our Student Council for organizing.

Student and parent information...

New: 6th Grade Groups

Recently, 6th grade students completed surveys indicating their interest in participating in before- and after-school discussion groups on a variety of issues they may face in middle school. Groups include the following:

Girls in Real Life Situations, which will focus on self-esteem, relationships, jealousy, reputations, body image, and tough choices.

Do The Right Thing, which will focus on controlling impulses, handling stress and other emotions, making positive choices, handling peer pressure and making good decisions.

United Against Bullying, which will focus on discussing situations in which students are bullied and finding positive solutions to handling bullying.

Students who signed up to participate should keep their eyes and ears open after the Winter Break for specific details on meeting times and places. Any student who did not sign up but would like to participate should see Ms. Banal or Ms. McFarland.

New: Wilson SHS Academy Information

All students who complete the 8th grade at Deal are guaranteed places at Wilson, regardless of their home address. Feeder and in-boundary students do not need to apply to an Academy to enroll at Wilson.

Some students may choose to apply in the 8th grade so that they can begin participating in Academy activities or begin a 4-year course of study as soon as they enter Wilson. However, this is optional.

Students can join academies anytime before the 11th grade. There is no "right" time to join an academy. Students should reflect and decide with their families when they are ready to commit to an academy's elective courses and extracurricular activities.

If you choose to apply to an academy as an incoming 9th grader, obtain an academy application from Ms. Hernandez or the Wilson website, www.wilson.org

Applications are due January 25th, 2012.

New: Mental Health Matters - from Team Vienna

Winter Break provides an opportunity for much needed rest and relaxation for teachers, parents, and students. This season can also be a source of stress and depression for many. Here are a few suggestions to help you avoid typical holiday stressors and to enjoy the season with your family and friends:

Reflect

* Give yourself permission to be jolly. Celebrate life.

* Write down all of the good things that have happened during 2011.

* Set a few personal goals for 2012.

Refresh

* Start new traditions with your friends and family.

* Reconnect with friends/family whom you haven't seen often.

Serve

* Do something good for someone else.

* Perform a community service activity as a family.

Take care of self

* Avoid over-indulgence in the many holiday treats.

* Go for a walk or ride to take in the crisp air, sunshine, and the scenery of our beautiful city.

* Get plenty of rest.

* Plan some quiet time for yourself where you do something enjoyable.

* Work smarter, not harder - focus on major priorities, let others go.

* Seek professional consultation if depression is severe or lengthy.

Have a safe and joyful holiday season!

Food for Thought . .

What's Needed to Be a Global Citizen in the 21st Century

In this article in Perspectives, Massachusetts educator/author John D'Auria suggests four proficiencies that students will need to be "nimble learners responding to challenges and opportunities that none of us can foresee":

* Seeking out diverse perspectives - "Too often, we gravitate toward like-minded people," says D'Auria, "a behavior that insulates us from expanding our perspective... Preparing for a global society requires that we become curious about how others think." It also helps to learn another language.

* Valuing emotional insights - "Recent research into emotional intelligence helps us to appreciate that emotions often contain important data," says D'Auria, "information that our cognitive processes are slower to grasp... Emotional connectivity also links us to other human beings, even when we cannot speak their language."

* Embracing creativity - "The global economy thrives on inventive thinking," he says. "We need to value creative skills and develop them in our students. This should not be the domain of a 'talented' few" - nor should it be buried in test preparation.

* Developing a growth mindset - Students will need to be continuous learners, which requires perseverance and resilience in the face of unknowable challenges and setbacks, says D'Auria. He believes educators need to explicitly teach Carol Dweck's key insights - that intelligence and talent develop through working hard using effective strategies. "We need to provide time and support for our students to value experimentation and strengthen their capacity to learn from mistakes," he concludes. "Though errors, failure, and setbacks are not what we seek, we need not fear them, and we should learn to recycle them into new learning."
