Principal's Message...
We had a fantastic first week! The 7th and 8th graders are adjusting to their new elevated roles and floors wonderfully. In fact, one of our 8th grade teachers stated that this year's group of 8th grade students is the best prepared and most impressive group she has had in 24 years! In addition, our 6th grade students have exceeded our expectations -- they have adjusted and transitioned to our school very easily. All students received textbooks -- students are expected to get them covered and to take good care of them.
This week, you will notice that our teachers have started their after-school club activities. Each Deal teacher shares his or her passion with students through extracurricular activities, because we know that building relationships with students is critical to school success. Also, middle school is the perfect time and place for students to see others model passion and engagement. Research tells us that students who are engaged in extracurricular activities perform better academically. There is a lot being offered and you cannot do everything, so take the time to review the offerings together as a family and make the choices that work best.
This week, we also have several parent meetings -- our first PTA meeting, as well 6th grade parent workshops and music family night. Start the year off right by staying visible and engaged with us!

Explorer Time
Deal's afterschool program, Explorer Time, is off to a great
start with between 90 and 100 students participating daily! Next week, all families who have completed the
original "Intent to Enroll" form will be sent a final enrollment packet to
confirm your child's participation.
Forms will be due on Friday, Sept. 3. We also expect to distribute
copies of the Parent/Guardian Guide to Afterschool Programs which we hope you
will find useful.
The high demand for the program (250 students!) required us
to start a waitlist on Aug. 20 so that we can provide appropriate staffing for
the program. We expect to bring on
additional staff in the coming weeks. You
will receive a call or e-mail from Ms. Berkey to let you know when your child
can start. If you are experiencing an urgent
need for a safe, structured afterschool program for your child, please e-mail
Ms. Berkey (Margaret.berkey@dc.gov)
and we will try to accommodate you right away.
All 7th and 8th grade students who pre-enrolled
are encouraged to begin attending as those groups currently have space.
Reminders about this year's program:
1. It is free of
charge.
2. We are serving supper rather than snack so students are
getting a more substantial amount of food at 4:30 pm each day.
3. We have organized the students by grade level and teams
for homework support with our teachers.
4. The program is designed to wrap around the many sports,
clubs and other Deal activities that take place from 3:30-4:30 during the
week. Students may join those
activities, then come to Explorer Time for supper and homework support. An enrollment form must be completed in order
for students to join the program, even if it is just to have supper after
sports practice. 5. Students are expected to follow school rules during after school time. Students will be removed from the program as a consequence to unacceptable behavior.

Food for thought...A Report on Effective Use of
Technology in Classrooms This
Reading Today column summarizes a new
study, Educators, Technology and 21st
Century Skills: Dispelling Five Myths, commissioned by the Richard W. Riley
College of Education and Leadership at Walden University. Drawing on a survey
of more than 1,000 elementary and secondary teachers and school-based
administrators in the U.S., the study found: ·
New-to-the-profession teachers and those with greater access to technology
don't necessarily use computers more often in their classrooms. ·
It isn't just high-achieving students who benefit from using technology. ·
Just because today's students are comfortable with technology doesn't mean that
teachers should ease off on classroom use of computers. ·
Teachers and administrators don't always have the same understandings about
classroom technology use and 21st-century skills. ·
Many new teachers don't feel well prepared to use technology in their
classrooms and foster 21st-century skills. The
report addresses each of these problem areas and then makes these
recommendations to teachers: - Be as
fearless as your students with technology. - Seek out
and create opportunities to collaborate with and learn from your peers. - Find the
best ways to integrate technology and 21st-century skills into the
curriculum. - Communicate
with parents. "Research
New to Use: Dispelling Technology Myths" in Reading
