Thought for the Week
"An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."
~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. |
Message from Principal Kim
I hope everyone enjoyed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Deal celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. King on Thursday with an assembly highlighting his life and accomplishments. Thanks to all the students who participated -- I was especially impressed with your poise. Starting today, I challenge you to live in Dr. King's spirit -- making choices that will promote opportunity and justice for all.
We have already reached the half-way point of the school year! This Friday marks the end of the 2nd advisory and students will be dismissed at 12:15pm so that teachers can finalize their grades. Be sure to turn in all of your assignments and projects!
Please save Saturday, February 20th, for the annual Alice Deal PTA Auction. The auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year and this year's theme is "Bright Lights, Big Cities!" In a break from tradition, our auction will be held at the school, so we can all celebrate the New Deal!
Parents, please donate items and services to the auction. Vacation homes, airline miles, meals, sports tickets, hosts for parties -- all are welcome! See the PTA website, www.dealpta.org, for details or contact Cindy Sherman, cksherman@comcast.net, 686-0582. I am looking forward to seeing you all there.

Debate This is a reminder that Debate Team will practice on Wednesday this week because of the Monday holiday. Our next tournament will be February 6 at Walker Mill Middle School in Prince Georges County. Visitors are very welcome and there is always a need for more judges to be trained. Please contact Ms. Sweeney in E304 with any questions. The International Cooking Club Group A will meet on Wednesday and Group B will meet on January 27, we will be making American apple-oatmeal crumble. Team San Francisco Hosts the Embassy of Indonesia As part of DCPS's Embassy Adoption Program, Team San Francisco will be partnered with the Embassy of Indonesia this year. On Wednesday, the Indonesian delegation will give a presentation to all 100 San Francisco students in the cafeteria from 10:00-10:30 am. The presentation will introduce the students to Indonesian culture and history. EQUALITY FOR ALL At Alice Deal Middle School we appreciate all. The Gay/Straight Alliance Club is meant to encourage that principle. The GSA will help promote and spread the idea that "all [people] are created equal". The club will: create a safe space for ALL students who wish to participate. The aim of this club is to stop inappropriate language and create a safe school environment. The club will consider all peoples' opinions and encourage people to express what they feel and hear during the school day that is negative OR positive towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or straight people. The club also takes into account the religious and personal beliefs on this subject. The Gay/Straight Alliance will meet on Fridays in W104 at 3:30 pm and will provide light snacks. The 1st meeting will be next Friday. Students should pick up a permission slip, if interested in participating in the club. If you have questions or concerns please contact Mr. Geremia, Mr. Lotts, Ms. Hernandez or email gsa.alicedeal@gmail.com.

Deal's Haitian Relief Effort
At Alice Deal our motto is think globally, listen compassionately, and act inclusively. In this light, we would like to respond to the devastation that has occurred in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The country occupies a third of the Island of Hispaniola and is located approximately a few hours from the tip of Florida. The island suffered a massive earthquake on Tuesday, January 12 which has led to near complete destruction of infrastructure and untold human suffering. In response to this tragic event, the World Language Department in collaboration with the Student Council would like to set up a Haitian relief effort. On Tuesday, January 19 and Wednesday, January 20, we are asking that students and staff make cash donations which will be sent to the Red Cross for support of Haiti. There will be envelopes in the homerooms and we would like students to take this time to aide those who have lost so much. Thank you.
Team La Paz Partners with the Smithsonian Museum of American Art Team La Paz students will begin their special project with the Smithsonian Museum of American Art starting next Monday. Suzannah Neipold, education coordinator for the museum, will meet with Ms. Szilagyi's English Language Arts classes on January 25 to review the process of art appreciation and good museum etiquette. Team students and their teachers will travel on January 27 to visit the museum for on-site analysis of eight selected works and for a special scavenger hunt of the open stacks and the modern art collection. Upon return, students will use their field trip notes to write original stories inspired by the art studied. Deal art teachers Ms. Bustos and Ms. Kouri will lead students through Ms. Mostoller's history classes to illustrate their stories. Every student then produces an individual page for a book published by the museum-a wonderful keepsake of our eighth grade year. 8th Grade Girl's Book Group The 8th grade girls' book group will meet again on Wednesday, January 27 at 3:30pm. We will be reading Who am I Without You? by Sharon Flake. Any 8th grade girl interested in joining the group should see Ms. Wylegala in Room C312 to pick up a copy of the book. Flake's stories promised to spark a great discussion! Come join us.
Team Cairo Celebrates DC-BAS Student Achievement and Enrichment Team Cairo celebrated student achievement and progress on the DC-BAS recently with a team-wide pizza party. The 60+ students who increased their overall English or Math scores by 5 or more percentage points on the DC-BAS were invited to a special celebratory pizza party lunch in Ms. Hampton's room. Team Cairo would like to congratulate students again for their progress! Keep up the good work! We hope to have all 91 Team Cairo students at our next celebration!
Students in Team Cairo also participated in a team-wide DC-BAS enrichment day before Winter Break. Students were challenged to complete tasks connected to standards from the DC-BAS in both English and Math. All students were given tickets for completing the various challenges throughout the day and then these tickets allowed students to gain access to an "Enrichment Party" at the end of the day. Students were able to work hard and also enjoy the skills practice as a team. It was also a great experience for students to celebrate their hard work together just before the holiday break! Great job, Team Cairo!
Students Helping Students Team Cairo, Humanities students with fantastic grades volunteered to help their classmates study. Students were given the opportunity to peer-tutor and get some advice and tips for test preparation during lunch and after school. The tutoring sessions proved to be quite a success! Thanks to all of you who participated!

Bring Your Videos and DVDs to the Library! Deal
Middle School has purchased many DVDs to help support classroom
instruction over the years. Until now, we've had no central place for
keeping track of their use and location. The Deal Library Media Center
will now be that hub. Please bring all videos and DVDs that
belong to Deal Middle School down to the library. They will be housed
in the library as part of our Video Collection, directly across from
the Teacher Resource Center. They will also be catalogued, making them
searchable, available, and useful to the school as a whole. If you
have a video you are presently using in your class, we will catalog it
quickly and immediately check it out to you.

Food for thought...
We're Already a "Good" School...
In
this AllThingsPLC advertisement in Education
Week, Richard DuFour describes the pushback he recently received from a
feisty high-school faculty. Teachers said their school was already "good" and
they hated top-down initiatives from the central office. When pressed, they did
concede that some students in the school weren't learning at high levels.
DuFour asked them how many failing students it would take for them to agree
that things had to change. "Put another way," he writes, "what would the level
of failure have to reach in order to cause them discomfort."
"Certainly
any organization that is to sustain its effectiveness over time must engage in
ongoing processes of continuous improvement," he continues. "Even more
certainly, a school that claims its fundamental purpose is to ensure high
levels of learning for all students should search for more effective practices
if even some of its students are not succeeding... Regardless of how 'good' a
faculty may consider its school, for the parent whose child does not learn, the
school has failed the child - 100 percent."
"We're
Already a 'Good' School - Why Do We Need to Improve?" by Richard DuFour in an
AllThingsPLC advertisement in Education
