Thought for the Week
"Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations...If you adopt their attitudes, then the possibility won't exist because you'll have already shut it out ... You can hear other people's wisdom, but you've got to re-evaluate the world for yourself."
~Mae Jemison |
Message from Principal Kim
What an auction! Even though we don't have official word from the auction co-chairs on how much money we raised, I know it was a huge success -- especially if we measure success in terms of the community building among hundreds of parents and teachers! Thanks to all the parents, students, and teachers who worked hard on the decorations, lighting, food, computer set-up, registration, check-out process, & clean-up. I am impressed by and appreciative of the many talented and generous folks who made our biggest fundraising event so joyful. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Enjoy some pictures taken by Ms. Ann Morgan! In preparation for parent-teacher conferences, you will be receiving confirmed meeting times from your team teachers by Thursday of this week. We look forward to meeting with you on March 1st. Again, you do not need an appointment time to meet with world language and elective teachers. Principal Kim |

Top Spellers
Congratulations to Wally Huron, Jacob Korn and Seamus Lynch who participated in the Cluster IV Spelling Bee. Seamus took first place and Jacob took second place in the competition. Both Seamus and Jacob will be progressing to the city-wide bee in March which will be broadcasted on Channel 4 WRC-TV. Alice Deal wishes the best of luck to our spellers!
Team Addis Ababa Congratulates Seamus Lynch
Seamus Lynch, a 6th grader, has done it again! This time he won first place in the Cluster Spelling Bee. His teachers and peers wish him luck in the city-wide Spelling Bee. You make us proud! Congratulations, Seamus!
Deal Scrabble Rocks! Deal (& Janney) teams took first place in the Virginia School Scrabble Championship on Friday. The event was help at the Alfred T. Binns Middle School in Culpeper, Va. A total of 28 players (14 teams) took part in the event. The teams were divided into two divisions based on age and experience.
Deal 7th grader Isaac Sarnoff took first place in the top division with a perfect 4-0 record. 7th graders Emma Keyes and Max Mellott and 6th graders Christopher Bock and Jake Radack also played in the top division.
The level of play was good in both groups. Lily and Isaac posted scores of 401, 390, 388 and 301 points in their wins, while Calvin and Sam averaged a total of 380 points per game. Sam and Sammy had high games of 406 and 397 points, while Ben and Brian posted the highest-scoring play of the tournament: HOWLING on a triple-word score for 112 points!
Some other nice plays: TINTERS by Christopher and Jake; UNBARRED and ADORNERS by Lily and Isaac; SMELLER (using both blank tiles) by Sam and Calvin; and the very creative RETIRED by Sam and Sammy -- adding the RE in front and the D in the back of the word TIRE already on the board. I also saw a lot of impressive overlaps of two- and three-letter words, and some terrific focus under the time pressure of using clocks.
Regardless of win-loss records, all the kids had a great time -- and learned about the difference between having fun in the club and competing in a tournament. It was excellent preparation for the players heading to the national championship for the first time, and a good introduction to competitive play for those who aren't going.
Many thanks to Kate Taylor, Mark Levenson and John Wagner for driving, and to Dianne Bock for dropping off snacks and word lists.
Congratulations Team Singapore

Food for thought...
Criteria
for Effective Service-Learning Programs
"Service
learning creates a bridge of interaction and shared purpose that improves
student learning and creates better schools and stronger communities," says
James Kielsmeier in this Kappan
article. About 24 percent of U.S. schools offer service learning options - 35
percent of high schools, 25 percent of middle schools, and 20 percent of
elementary schools. Here are the National Youth Leadership Council's
recommended standards for high-quality service learning:
-
Meaningful
service - It actively engages participants in helpful and personally relevant
service activities.
-
Curriculum
links - It aligns with the school's learning goals and state content standards.
-
Reflection
- It includes plenty of challenging activities that get students thinking about
themselves and their links to society.
-
Diversity
- It promotes understanding of diversity and mutual respect among participants.
-
Youth
voice - It provides youth with a strong role in planning, implementing, and
evaluating their service experiences, with adult guidance.
-
Partnerships
- Community partners are collaborative, mutually beneficial, and address social
needs.
-
Progress
monitoring - It engages participants in ongoing assessment of the quality of
implementation and progress toward goals, and data are used for improvement and
sustainability.
-
Duration
and intensity - It lasts long enough to address community needs and meet its
goals.

a Bridge Between Service and Learning" by James Kielsmeier in Phi Delta Kappan, February 2010 (Vol.
