Deal Tours

In order to accommodate continuing community requests to see Deal in action, the counselors and Mr. Albright teamed up to offer "Visit the New Deal" days throughout the second semester. These bi-weekly sessions have allowed families who haven't been able to visit us during our Open Houses to get a feel for the school and to meet with Deal representatives. The final tour is from 9 - 10 am on May 7.

Zeroes Aren't Permitted!

Students who need a place to catch up on their late homework, get support for assignments or projects, or who just need a place to work can join us in ZAP! each day. Students must go to the ZAP! room at the beginning of lunch to get a ZAP! pass and to drop off their books.   Let's stay on top of the work for the last advisory!

* Special note: there will be no ZAP! on testing days (DC BAS or CAS) due to the shortened lunch blocks.

Message from Principal Kim

Everyone is doing a wonderful job with the DC CAS testing.  We have 2 more official testing days to go!  I am really thankful for all of the students who are getting to school each day on time!  You are doing a great job with that.  Please keep it up!

Teachers, you are reminded to actively proctor during the test.  Under no circumstances should you be reading a book or on the computer.

Finally, come see the production of Aladdin this Thursday!  The show begins at 7pm on Thursday and Friday evening.  The tickets are $5.  The 96 students involved have been working hard singing and dancing.  I can't wait to see how they perform in our newly renovated auditorium!

Summer School:
The deadline for enrolling in summer school is April 30! After that date a waitlist will be established.   Letters were mailed on April 21 to the parents of students in grades 6, 7, and 8 if summer school was recommended for their child.  Parents, if you receive one of these letters, please fill out the one page application and return it to the Welcome Center at Deal (attention Ms. Berkey).  We regret the short time to return the form but we held the letters to the end of the third marking period to ensure that they were sent to all appropriate homes.

Enrollment in Afterschool Program for SY 2010-2011:
All families wishing to enroll students in the afterschool program next year should complete the Intent to Enroll form that was sent by DCPS along with your proof of residency forms.  (If you did not receive one, they are available on the DCPS website or in the Welcome Center at Deal.) This one-page form will serve to enroll your child for the first two weeks of programming when next school year begins.  During that time, the updated enrollment packet for next school year will be given to you.  There will be no co-payment for the first two weeks and we will start the program on the first day of school.  The Intent to Enroll forms are very important to us for staffing and planning purposes, so we hope you will take the time now to fill one out if you want your child to participate next year either full or part-time. Questions about Deal's Explorer Time program should be directed to Ms. Berkey at margaret.berkey@dc.gov.

Athletic Banquet

All competitive sports will be recognized an athletic banquet on Wednesday, June 2 at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.

Staff information. . .

GWU Partnership
This is a special invitation for teachers who work with or are interested in working with novice teachers and teacher interns. This summer GWU is offering a Cooperating Teacher Academy taking place June 30, July 1, 6, 7 & 8 from 9:00-4:00 at the GWU, Alexandria Campus (across from the King Street Metro Station).

This academy supports professional development needs of teacher educators who are often left to figure out on their own what their roles and responsibilities are when mentoring/supervising a novice teacher. We agree that this work requires a new set of skills, abilities, and orientation toward developing expertise in others.

The Department of Teacher Preparation and Special Education has developed a graduate level course: TRED 309 - Supervising the Preservice Clinical Experience to address this need.   The course has been condensed into a five-day academy experience that carries with it your choice of one or three graduate credits. In addition, cooperating teachers may apply a tuition voucher to supplement part of the cost. Tuition vouchers are options to the honoraria provided by our school to cooperating teachers for hosting a teacher intern. Contact me at patricia.lynn.tate@gmail.com for more information about this option.

If you are interested in registering for this course please contact Philip Bernhardt (pbern@gwu.edu) or Vince O'Neil (voneill@gwmail.gwu.edu).   Different tuition rates will apply for students who are taking the course as non-degree.  Degree and non-degree status students will have separate registration instructions, therefore it is important that registration be coordinated through Philip or Vince.

Free Classroom Materials

Help students discover the beauty of Asian Pacific American heritage. This May, Target and the Smithsonian Institution collaborated to bring you classroom materials that inspire exploration and involvement.
These free classroom materials provide a compelling look at Hawaiian culture and Chinese American art and poetry.
Check out these and other resources at Target.com/Education http://pull.xmr3.com/p/985-D3E2/98289398/http-www.target.com-education.html or http://pull.xmr3.com/p/985-B84F/98224011/clickto1_e.jsp-contentId=WCMP04-042306.html.

The DC-CAS Continues

7th and 8th grade teachers are reminded to remove/cover information posted in their classrooms that may be considered "content" until the end of testing.  Your rooms should remain in a testing configuration as well.  Teachers and proctors must monitor students during testing at all times.  You are not permitted to read, work on your computer, use your cell phone, etc.  Additionally, please be mindful of test security conditions as you check out and return tests.

Anchor Assignments

All anchor assignments must be completed and scored by June 2.  Teachers should contact Ms. Neal with any questions.

6th Grade Team Teachers Meeting

All 6th grade team teachers will meet with Ms. Neal on Wednesday at 8:10 am.

Grade-level Department Chairpersons Meeting

There is a grade-level department chairpersons meeting on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
