This Wednesday, the Tenleytown Whole Foods Market brings us:
glazed carrots!
Don't miss out & give it a try along with your lunch on Wednesday!
|
Deal Tours
In order to accommodate continuing community requests to see Deal in action, the counselors and Mr. Albright have teamed up to offer "Visit the New Deal" days throughout the second semester. These bi-weekly sessions will allow families who haven't been able to visit us during our Open Houses to get a feel for the school and to meet with Deal representatives. The final tour is from 9 - 10 am on May 7.
|
Zeroes Aren't Permitted!
Students who need a place to catch up on their late homework, get support for
assignments or projects, or who just need a place to work can join us in ZAP!
each day. Students must go to the ZAP! room at the beginning of lunch to get a
ZAP! pass and to drop off their books. Let's stay on top of the work for the last advisory!
* Special note: there will be no ZAP! on
testing days (DC BAS or CAS) due to the shortened lunch blocks.

 Message from Principal Kim
The
District of Columbia Public School System will be administering the DC
CAS assessment this week. We have been preparing for this and I know that we are more than ready!
I LOVED the Friday pep rally! Thanks to all of the students and teachers who made it so much fun. The spirit as wel cheered and celebrated with our green and blue beads and pie throwing was hard to beat! We were also excited to have Councilwoman Cheh present us with City Council's proclamation of Deal's IB status!
During the week of testing it is extremely
important that students continue to arrive to school on time, get a
good night's rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and be prepared to do their
very best. Please review the testing schedule below so that you are
apprised of the dates and subjects being assessed. Tuesday, April 20 (Reading 1 and 2) Wednesday, April 21 (Reading 3 and 4) Thursday, April 22 (Math 1 and 2) Friday, April 23 (Math 3 and 4)
Monday, April 26 (Reading Test Make-up)
Tuesday, April 27 (Writing - 7th grade students only) Wednesday, April 28 (Science - 8th grade students only) Thursday, April 29 (Math and Composition Test Make-up) All students should come to school with two #2 pencils and prepared to do their very best.

Deal Library Thanks to Senora DeRosa
Deal Library would like to thank Spanish teacher Senora DeRosa for the donation of 40 Spanish Language classic novels by Spanish authors. This addition to the library greatly expands our existing Spanish materials collection and gives students a greater variety of middle and high-level Spanish reading materials to choose.
Summer School Update Applications have been coming in for summer school! Please remember that the enrollment deadline is April 30. After that date a waitlist will be established. Forms are in the Welcome Center and are also being mailed to selected families. The program will be a good way for students to keep on track in mathematics and language arts. Return completed applications to Ms. Berkey's mailbox in the Welcome Center.
NOTE: The site for Deal students has changed once more, but this should truly be the last change! We will now be at the Francis-Stevens campus at 2425 N Street, NW. In an effort to conserve paper we have decided not to reprint all the application materials listing our site as Oyster-Adams, but rest assured that all enrollment forms will go to our new site at Francis-Stevens. Please direct questions to Ms. Berkey at margaret.berkey@dc.gov. 6th Grade Science Students Perform Planetarium Stories at the National Air & Space Museum! As part of the Explore the Universe Family Day on Saturday, April 10 at the National Air & Space Museum's Einstein Planetarium, the Planetarium show soundtrack featured several of our very own Alice Deal Middle School students reading and rapping their own original stories and poems! A large group of Alice Deal students, families and teachers were greeted by a TV camera to record their impressions of participating in the program. Special "I'm a Starry Teller!" t-shirts were worn by the "stars" of the show in the audience as they sat in special reclining upholstered seats, and listened to their voices booming out over the planetarium sound system! The students' recorded performances included sound effects and original music produced by Giraffe 'n Ant Productions and directed by Elizabeth Wallace. Congratulations to everyone who participated! Spring Trip Deposit it Due The total cost of the trip to Hershey Park is $260, which was due on April 7. We are still in need of chaperones for this trip. If you are a parent and interested in going to help, please alert Mr. Frye or Mr. Jackson. Music Man Costumes All students performing in the Music Man Jr. must have their costumes and props in school by Monday, April 27. Please have everything labeled with your name on it and it will be stored in the choir room. A list went home with the students last month outlining the costume needs. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact Mr. Frye or Mr. Jackson. Athletic Banquet All competitive sports will be recognized an athletic banquet on Wednesday, June 2 at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.

Food for thought...
Summarizing to Comprehend
Reading
comprehension is basically summarizing, says Robert Marzano in this Educational Leadership article -
"restating content in a succinct manner that highlights the most crucial
information." When students summarize well, their achievement goes up 19
percentile points. Here are five effective strategies: ·
Clarify what's important. To do this,
students need to know the structure inherent to the text they're reading. In a
story, that's main characters, rising and falling action, setting... ·
Know different text structures. Most
students know story structure, but they need to understand others: description,
comparison, problem/solution, generalization (a general statement followed by
examples), argument (a statement followed by proof or evidence), and definition
(a specific term followed by its general category, its specific
characteristics, and how it's different from others in the category). ·
Help students recognize multiple
structures. Longer expository texts often have structures layered within
structures - for example, generalizations and then descriptions. ·
Encourage graphics. Drawing a picture
while reading is a big help to comprehension - for example, a circle
representing the main idea and spokes showing various characteristics. ·
Review essential terminology.
Teachers should make sure students have a basic understanding of technical
terms before reading - for example, meiosis,
mitosis, and symbiosis in a
science text. "Summarizing
to Comprehend" by Robert Marzano in Educational
Leadership, March 2010 (Vol. 67, #6, p. 83-84); this article can be
