Message from Principal Kim

What a busy week we had getting into the school groove again!  It was a pleasure to see you again after the Spring Break!  Thanks to you for your attention and cooperation during the grade-level assemblies about school academic and conduct expectations.  Your teachers and I are excited about this final advisory.

Thanks to all of the students who came out for the food competition filming on Saturday. I cannot wait to see you when the episode airs nationally. The directors and producers complemented your enthusiasm & stage presence!

This is the last week of classes before we take the DC CAS. The DC CAS is an important measure of your academic achievement. Although it does not directly "count" for a grade, it does "count" for your admission to competitive high schools, and it "counts" for our school. We have the distinction of being the highest performing middle school in the District and I need you to do your best to ensure that we hold on to this honor. I know you are more than ready for it! Make this last week of preparation count!

Have a wonderfully productive learning week.

Principal Kim

DC CAS Pie Raffle
Students, are your teachers brave enough to withstand a pie to the face?  Ask them if they are participating in the "Pie the Teacher" raffle and how you can earn tickets to participate! Study hard; earn tickets; hit a teacher with a pie!

Library News
Teachers are invited to visit the Deal library to "check out" our new book arrivals.  In addition to new nonfiction and fiction selections, professional teaching and parenting teens books have been processed into the collection.  From your classroom computers, look at these new book lists through the Deal Online Library Catalog at alicedeal.org - select "Media Center", go to "Resource Lists", select "Public Lists", scroll down the alphabetical list to view "New Book Order 2/10" and "New Book Arrivals 3/2010".  If you have any questions, please e-mail the librarians at alicedealLMC@gmail.com.

Scrabble News

The entire D.C. contingent performed with skill and enthusiasm -- even when the tiles didn't fall their way at the National School Scrabble Championship (NSSC) in Orlando.  6th graders Jake Radack and Christopher Bock went 3-3, while NSSC veterans 7th graders Emma Keyes and Max Mellott endured a run of bad luck and wound up at 2-4.

Still everyone had a great time filled with tons of Scrabble and the beautiful weather, the pool just outside the playing area and various trips to Disney and Universal didn't hurt. Congrats Deal Scrabblers!

Free Rice
As IB Learners one of our goals is to be compassionate life-long learners.  One way that students and teachers can practice their Math, Vocabulary, Language, Geography and Art skills as they help others is through a web site called
www.freerice.com. Sponsored by private companies, Free Rice donates 10 grains of rice for every right answer to the World Food Program. The learning activities also help students practice for the upcoming DC-CAS tests while helping others at the same time.  We hope that teachers and students will take advantage of this learning opportunity both in the classroom, in our library, and at home.

Athletic Banquet

All competitive sports will be recognized an athletic banquet on Wednesday, June 2 at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.

Testing Committee
Teachers who are interested in participating in the DC CAS testing committee should attend our meeting on today. The meeting will take place after school in the counseling suite. There are several new procedures that will be required this year.  Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

DC CAS Pie Raffle

Deal Teachers!  Always claiming you would do anything for your students' success?  Time to step up and take one for the team!  As part of CAS Madness volunteers will be accepted to participate in a Pie Your Teacher raffle. Throughout next week, teachers will have tickets given to them to use as incentives for students (based on behavior, Probes, academic challenges, and other rewards). Participating staff members will provide a "collection bin" in their rooms or designated area for students that have earned these tickets to place their name into your bin.  At the DC CAS Madness rally, teachers will select a ticket randomly from their bin and that student will be called forward to stand and deliver the aforementioned pie.

Tickets given to students do not need to be placed in that teacher's box - they may be given to any participating teacher!  Teachers wanting a pie more elaborate than simple whipped cream on a paper plate are welcome to bring their own dessert.

Teachers interested, contact Steve Lotts at
dealnairobi@gmail.com and look forward to your tickets in your mail boxes next week!

Deal PTA Newsletter Reminder
The deadline for the April newsletter is COB Thursday, April 15 (April 16 is a no school day) to the newsletter co-editors Beth Allaben & Margie Trinity.

Twelve Ways to Make Information Stick in Students' Brains

"When information is presented to students, it goes into the working memory of their brain," says teacher/writer Bill Page in this Teachers.Net/Gazette article (featured in Education Digest). The information is likely to evaporate unless something moves it into long-term memory. How can teachers make that happen? Page shares 12 strategies:

            · Make it personal. Pairing students, having them work in small groups, and orchestrating interactive activities all help to link new information to each student's prior knowledge and experiences.

            · Make it interesting. "Teachers must find another way to teach those who did not learn the lesson the first time," says Page. The best way to do that is to hook students' interest.

            · Help students construct meaning. "If new information does not connect or relate to existing knowledge, the brain will not accept it," says Page. Teachers need to listen carefully as students process new information and involve them in constructing their own meaning. "Students learn more by answering their own questions of 'why'," he says, "than by someone giving them reasons for 'why'."

            · Make it meaningful. "The why is more important than the what in learning," says Page. New information has to make sense to students.

            · Have students apply new knowledge. Students "use it or lose it," says Page. "Pairing and small-group discussions are crucial to learning."

            · Engage emotions. "We learn in direct proportion to the strength of our feelings," says Page, "- especially our likes and dislikes... Emotions are why we remember the person who sat behind us in the 7th grade, but can't remember the name of someone we met yesterday."

            · Maximize the use of the senses. The brain's neurons take in information from hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, and touching, says Page: "The more neurons that are affected by stimuli from different sources, the stronger and longer lasting the memory and recall ability will be."

            · Make it social. "What we value in learning depends on what those around us are learning," says Page. "We learn from the company we keep."

            · Apply the laws of learning. Teachers need to be savvy to predictable patterns of attention, memory, retrieval, and forgetting, says Page. One way is to make connections to children's interests, including sports and holidays.

            · Use associations. "The brain works by linking things to other things," says Page. "Memory relies on patterns, concepts, meaningfulness, relevance, and associations." That's why using similes, metaphors, and well-chosen examples is so helpful.

            · Teach concepts. Once students grasp a general concept, the facts related to it fall into place and are much easier to remember.

            · Climb Bloom's ladder. About 95 percent of teaching and testing is at the lowest Bloom levels - knowledge and comprehension. Disconnected bits of knowledge are the easiest to "teach" (Memorize the 50 state capitals) but the hardest for students to commit to long-term memory. When teachers "put facts in meaningful groups or concepts," says Page, "they're more easily learned." And that means getting students applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating.
