Zeroes Aren't Permitted
ZAP! runs all week during all 3 lunch periods. Teachers and parents should feel free to suggest that students visit ZAP! to catch up on late homework.
ZAP! provides students a chance to get one-on-one help, approach a problem from a new angle, or work with peers on group work. Remember to remind students that they should come directly to ZAP! with their books at the beginning of their lunch period. Students will be given a pass to get a fast lunch and then return to ZAP! refreshed and ready to work! |

Explorer Time Comes to Deal!!
The DCPS Office of Out-of-School Time and Deal MS are offering a new after school program open to all Deal students. "Explorer Time" will run from 3:30-6:15; Monday through Friday and features:
- Participation in Deal clubs, sports, and tutoring support
- Academic Power Hour with homework help and instruction from teachers
- A structured approach to organizing assignments and getting work done
- Supervised fun, recreational, social, and skill building activities
- Partnership with Latin American Youth Center (LAYC)
Participation in the program requires a formal application and co-payment of $5 per day, with free and reduced options based on family income. Families may enroll for a regular schedule of less than 5 days a week (e.g., Mon, Wed & Fri) however the program cannot accept students on an emergency drop-in basis. Enrollment forms are available on the Deal website. The program coordinator for our school is Margot Berkey, a former Deal parent with extensive knowledge of our community, as well as with managing programs for diverse groups of adolescents. For more information, e-mail margaret.berkey@dc.gov or call the school and Ms. Berkey will return your call between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Ms. Berkey is available to receive your enrollment application with necessary documents, and discuss payment between the hours of 3:00-6:00 pm. Enrollment in the after school program is similar to the annual proof of residency process that you've already completed. Have your child become a Deal Explorer!

Boy Scouts of America
The Washington, DC District of the Boy Scouts of America is creating a fun and interactive camping demonstration on the grounds of Fort Reno Park, directly across from Deal Middle School just south of Fort Dr NW. The 6th grade boys of Deal are invited to walk through the display and interact with scouts from a few of the neighborhood Boy Scout troops between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm on Tuesday, November 10. By partnering with the National Park Service, we hope that introducing youth to camping and outdoor activity will not only peak their interest in Boy Scouts, but attract them to outdoor recreation and the National Parks. This is a free event.

Thought for the Week
"Differentiation is defined as a response to the cognitive, affective, social, and physical characteristics that distinguish what and how students learn. A classroom where learners are provided with equal opportunity to learn, but are not expected to learn the same curriculum in the same way at the same time is the context that exemplifies differentiation. Respect for individual differences among and between learners is a definition of differentiation." Sandra Kaplan

Message from Principal Kim
As we enter November, we take a moment this week to focus on life beyond middle school with our annual career day. Students, this is an opportunity for you to meet adults from our community and ask them about the classes they took and the life choices they made to build a career. This is a good time to begin thinking about college and life beyond college -- how can you channel your passion into a career?
Parents, we also remind you to focus on getting your children to school on time. Plan for the morning routine as well as traffic. We have noticed that the large number of students who get to school late are the ones who get dropped off by parents. Please make the necessary adjustments so that your morning and theirs can start smoothly. Additionally, please plan for the time that it will take to turn the car around at the end of Fort Drive close to the water tower. Some drivers have attempted to turn around at Howard Drive, which creates a hazard and delays for others. We are concerned that these turns also create conditions that could lead to an accident. Please do not let your rush to cut through become a tragedy for children.
Finally, please look for report cards on Friday afternoon. We will be sending them home with your children.

Food for thought...
State of Mind: The Characteristics of Idealistic,
Contented, and Disheartened Teachers
In
this Education Week article, Andrew
Yarrow reports on a study by Public Agenda and Learning Points Associates,
"Teaching for a Living: How Teachers See the Profession Today." According to
its analysis, American teachers fall into three categories:
·
Idealists - About 23 percent of
teachers; more than half are 32 or younger; they went into teaching to help
disadvantaged students; 54 percent think that all their students can go to
college with the right support; they believe their teaching has a positive
impact on students' test scores, and say that good teachers can lead all
students to learn, even those who don't get as much support at home; 93 percent
say their principals give them good support.
·
Contented - About 37 percent of
teachers; they are almost all 33 and over and have more teaching experience; 30
percent believe their students can go to college with the right support; they
mostly work in middle- or higher-income schools, report excellent working
conditions and principal support, and believe their teaching has a lot of
impact on their students' test scores,
·
Disheartened - About 40 percent of
teachers; they are mostly 33 and over; 39 percent believe their students can go
to college with the right support; they tend to be concerned about their
working conditions, student behavior, and testing, give their principals low
ratings for supporting teachers, and are concerned about burnout. Yarrow closes
with a question: are some disheartened teachers trapped in dysfunctional
schools, and could they be motivated to be effective by a better setting and strong
school leadership - or "would it be better for some portion of them and their
students if they found another line of work?"
"State
of Mind" by Andrew Yarrow in Education

- the article has excellent graphs comparing the three groups of teachers.
