| IB MYP at Deal! |
The IB MYP is a structured program built around a school's state-provided curriculum. For schools that are authorized to offer IB, there are a number of guiding documents that describe how the program should look.
One critical piece is the IB Program Standards. These are the practices against which IB schools are evaluated. There are four major sections:
- philosophy
- organization
- curriculum
- student
Standard A1 (philosophy) insists that there be "close alignment between the educational beliefs and values of the school and those of the program." In this standard, one can find language about the learner profile (the 10 characteristic properties of the IB student). The learner profile has struck a chord in many IB communities, as it matches closely with what many feel are their hopes for their students: that they be inquirers, balanced, open-minded, caring, principled, communicators and so forth. Find more about the profile on the web at www.ibo.org or look at the course outlines that you picked up at the Back-to-School Night last week. We will be building student and adult activities around the profile in the future.

I greatly enjoyed Parent Teacher Conference Day. Thanks to everyone who made it so successful. I also appreciate the willingness of families who could not get scheduled for Friday to come in and meet with teachers this week. Additionally, I am thankful to the teachers for adjusting other meeting schedules to prioritize parent meetings.
We have now officially moved out of our old main office to our new, modernized Welcome Center! As a part of this transition, our main school phone number has changed. Please make a note: Our new phone number is 202-939-2010. Our fax number remains unchanged: 202-282-1116. Thank you for your patience with periods of phone difficulties last week during the transition.
One of the most impressive aspects of Deal is how we have integrated the National History Day project into the curriculum for all students. Our unparalleled social studies team will be hosting an information session this Tuesday at 7 pm, that will be extremely informative for students and their families. Hope to see everyone on Tuesday night.

Classroom Visit from 8th Grade Counselor

Department of Music Listserv
- The Music Department uses a listserv to communicate information to students and parents. All students involved with the Department of Music should sign up. To become a member, send an email to roger.jackson@dc.gov.
Come Tuesday to learn about National History Day!
- Students and their parents are invited to a special workshop at 7 pm, Tuesday, to learn more about Deal's participation in the National History Day program. This year's theme is "The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies." This will be your opportunity to see what great exhibit boards, documentaries, performances, and research papers look like. Missy McNatt, the DC coordinator for NHD will be here to answer questions, help explain the resources available at the National Archives, and to start our preparations for another successful year.
The workshop runs from 7-8 pm in the cafeteria -- you should be able to return home in time to watch the second Presidential debate!
Data Presentations
- Dr. Wilhoyte will visit our school in mid-October for team/department data presentations. Teachers are encouraged to work collaboratively to disaggregate our DCBAS data, with the Data Dean taking the lead role for the teams and department chairs taking the lead role for departments. Each member of the team should feel comfortable with presenting your findings and action plans. Feel free to use the template as the foundation for the presentation, but also enrich as you see fit!

Family Math Night
- The new date for Family Math Night is Thursday, November 13th. We will feature interactive hands-on activities to:
- show how to highlight math in real life moments and
- demonstrate some of the cool "stuff " your kids are learning in school.
Students are encouraged to attend with their parents.
Deal Debate
- Deal's Debate Team started its season with a resounding win at George
Washington University this Saturday. Of the 79 debaters competing, 5 of
the top 7 were from Deal. We brought home the Sweepstakes trophy by
winning 23 debates. Of 27 teams competing, teams from Deal placed #1,
4, 5, 7, and 10. The #1 team, composed of returning champions Abbie Israel,
Derek Levinson, and Lena Shapiro, went undefeated for the day. Seventh
grade rookie of the day was Luke Trinity, who took fourth in individual
speaker points. Congratulations to all the debaters, who displayed great
skill and sportsmanship.
Debate club will meet in Mrs. Sweeney's room on Monday from 3:20 to 4:30.
Field Trip Opportunities
- Teachers are invited to attend a workshop offered by the National Building Museum to explore how you can encourage your students to "go green." It will be held on Saturday, October 25, from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. For more information and to register for this and future workshops visit www.nbm.org.
Homework Hotline
The Homework Hotline is operating!
- Teachers: The Homework Hotline date input forms should be submitted by the close of business on Thursdays. Please place the completed data form in the Homework Hotline mailbox. The forms are on the counter in the main office. Please use only black or blue pens to fill out the forms. No pencils, please!!!
Deal International Night is next week!!

International Night is next Thursday, October 16th! This year is the 29th Annual Deal International
Night, an exciting and fun event that celebrates the rich diversity of the Deal
Community. The evening provides an opportunity for parents, students, and
teachers to come together to socialize and enjoy delicious foods from around
the world. Deal's own students will provide the entertainment -- the
school band, choir, language class students, and others will perform.
In order to make International Night a success, we need your help!
If you have already filled out an International Night Volunteer form with your
PTA packet, you will be contacted soon. If you have not yet volunteered,
please do so today. We need families to bring food and to help out
the night of the event. Cuisines represented include African, Asian,
American Regional, Middle East, European, Caribbean,

Ponganse sus delantales! "Deal
International Night" (la Noche Internacional de Deal) es el jueves 16 de
octubre! Este año es el
29o aniversario de "Deal International Night," un evento muy alegre y divertido
en el cual se celebra la diversidad de la Comunidad de Deal. Esta celebración permite que padres,
estudiantes y maestros se unan para compartir un rato y disfrutar comidas
deliciosas de varias partes del mundo. Estudiantes
de Deal proveerán el entretenimiento - la orquesta de le escuela, el coro,
estudiantes de varios idiomas y otros tomaran parte en el evento. Pero necesitamos su ayuda para asegurar el
éxito de "International Night"! Si ya ha
llenado y entregado el formulario (que recibió como parte de los documentos del
PTA) para ser voluntario en este evento, ya será contactado muy pronto. Si todavía no se ha ofrecido como voluntario/a, hágalo
