International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP) at Deal!
|
|
IB Parent Information Night October 21st, 6:30 pm, in the cafeteria. See you there!
Deal MS will be working with an experienced consultant to get us through this "candidate" year.
Using consultants is a relatively new approach for the IB, to ensure that schools that become MYP world schools are putting their very best feet forward.
The consultant will be visiting the school and providing some observations about our planning and implementation process.
Deal teachers will be developing IB MYP units of learning for the end of the 1st quarter or the start of the 2nd quarter.
These will be identified as IB MYP Units and students will be bringing home information that explains the assessment process for the units.
Keep an eye open for these!

Message from Principal Kim

|
Back-to-School-Night is this Thursday at 6:30. Here is a little preview of what to expect...
- 6:30 - 6:40 Welcome in the Gymnasium
- 6:45 - 8:50 Parents will go through a truncated version of their child's daily schedule, meeting the child's teachers. Learn about what the year holds in each of the classes!
Back-to-School night has always been a great way for parents to meet teachers and for teachers to meet families. Students thrive when their two worlds of school and home meet successfully.
See you on Thursday night!
Principal Kim Alice Deal Middle School
PS - All parents interested having their child participate in international trips should plan on coming to school at 5:30 to meet with the World Language teachers. |

News from the Academic Advisor
- Students
completed the first round of DCBAS testing. These are benchmark
assessments used to assess student development throughout the year. Even though it was a new
experience to do it so early in the year, the testing went very
smoothly and results are now being evaluated.
- ZAP (Zeroes Aren't Permitted) will begin next week.
Students who have fallen behind in their homework completion may be
asked to attend ZAP. ZAP provides a quiet environment with support for
students to complete those necessary homework assignments. ZAP will be
held in room N103 above the gym.
- Teachers ZAPping students: Please place the list of ZAPees
in Mr. Albright's box by the end of the day (4 pm) before students are
asked to attend.
Sports Physical Examinations
- Today at 5:30 pm, Dr. Karl Hammonds will come to Deal to conduct physical examinations for students who still need this service. The cost for this exam is $25. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to get a physical exam if he/she plans to be a member of an athletic team this school year. Students were given permission slips by their coaches last week.
Cash or checks will be accepted as payment and receipts will be issued. Checks should be made out to Dr. Karl Hammonds. We must have a minimum of 10 students confirmed in order for Dr. Hammonds to come to our school.
Students taking a physical will assemble in the gymnasium after school, where they can watch cheerleading and volleyball practice, or do their homework until the exams begin. They will be supervised by Mr. Jenkins.
Student Council Induction Ceremony
- We are on a Bell II schedule on Wednesday. During the Bell II Activity Period, students will attend the Student Council Induction Ceremony in the gymnasium. Please escort students down without their books. Thanks!

Learning to play a stringed instrument? Want to play with others at Deal?
- Attention all students interested in joining a string ensemble at Deal. While Deal no longer offers orchestra as part of its music curriculum, a new string group will be forming this Fall, with rehearsals at Deal once per week after school from 3:30-4:30 (either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, to be determined based on availability of those interested). Students must have studied violin, viola, cello, or bass for at least a year, and they must be able to read music. A professional music teacher will be hired to work with our young musicians. Students will audition with the teacher to determine placement and appropriate musical pieces for performance. There will be a modest contribution expected to cover the costs of the program (estimated at $100 each term per student musician, based on an assumption of 10 students, but the contribution would be lower if there is greater participation). If interested, or if you want more information, please contact Brigid McCarthy at brigidmccarthy@yahoo.com (ph. 364-2857) or John Borrazzo at jborrazzo@att.net (ph: 537-0633). If sending email, please include: name of student, grade, instrument, years played, and day of week available from 3:30-4:30 (either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday).
Sally Foster Gift Wrap Sale
- There is about a week to obtain orders for the Sally Foster gift wrap sale, going on through the end of the month. Order forms will be collected Thursday at Back-to-School night and again on Monday, Sept. 29th. You can also order online by clicking on the Sally Foster link on the Deal website (http://www.dealpta.org). As an extra incentive, the PTA is offering to the homeroom class that brings in the most sales a lunchtime pizza party or taco party. Thanks for your support of Deal Middle School and the PTA. For questions, contact Anita Seline at amseline@aol.com or 202-237-5505.
Teachers and Staff: LIKE TO RUN?
- Then come run with the Alice Deal Cross Country Teams. We'll host one teacher run a week. This week you can run with the teams on Wednesday. Just change into your running gear and meet us outside of the locker rooms by 3:30 pm. We'll jog over to Fort Reno Park to warm-up for 15 minutes and then begin our work out. Any questions? See Mr. Geremia.
PTA Envelopes
- HR
Teachers,
please send all the PTA envelopes you have down to the office
today. I know that teachers
are waiting to have 100% return, but we now need what you have sent
down to the office. Please keep track of who still did not return
their envelopes.
