Message from Principal Kim

I had so much fun skiing with the Deal ski club last Thursday. It was a great day to watch students learn to ski for the first time, see a new side of other students as they expertly maneuvered the slopes, and watch many push themselves beyond what they thought they were capable of doing. We are so lucky to have teachers who sponsor such wonderful activities for students. The adults at Deal are committed to supporting the developing adolescent! Thanks to Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Koplowitz for leading this trip and to the many other Deal teachers who share their passions with students.
Unfortunately, I was unable to be present for the first awards ceremony on Friday, due to an important modernization meeting involving Allen Lew of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization. I want the students to know I would not have missed it for much else. And, afterward, I did hear all about it! I heard about the striking images of the many students rising for honor roll and perfect attendance recognition; I heard about the team spirit as students of the fall teams received awards from their coaches; and I was excited to receive this year's snazzy Deal Fencing Club t-shirt!
Big thanks to Mr. Kirschenbaum and his work with the student council to organize these celebrations. Thanks to Ms. Baxter for preparing the academic honors certificates. And a special thanks to our fall coaches, Mr. Mbayu, Mr. Ngwa, Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Spann, Ms. Lerum, Mr. Jenkins, and Mr. Geremia for your dedicated work to develop students beyond your classrooms.
I know I am leaving out the other club sponsors who continue to work with kids throughout the year - with rugby, MathCounts, debate, exercise club, band, choir, art club, cheerleading, movie club, knitting club, etc. ... but the list goes on too long to mention in this small reflection today.
Please take a moment to read this week's "Food for Thought" article, as it emphasizes the importance of these extracurricular activities for students. Students, if you are not involved in one, get involved!!! You are certainly missing out!
Lastly, thanks to all the parent volunteers and parent contribuitors who made this weekend's Deal Phone-a-thon such a success! I love being a part of a community where everyone goes above and beyond for our students! I hope to see many of your at the PTA meeting this Thursday!
Principal Kim

Congratulations
Congratulations to Anne Chambers, Charlotte Hovland, Molly Charles, and Ulysses Campbell on their participation in the IB Model UN Competition this past weekend. Congratulations on a job well done.
Student reminders:
- Get to ALL classes on time! There is too much lingering between classes especially after lunch periods. Punctuality is important!
- This is the toughest time of the school year. You are juggling multiple assignments and projects and the teachers have raised the bar for rigor. You must be organized and adhere to time lines to stay successful. If you are struggling, please see one of your teachers, a counselor, or Mr. Albright!
Teacher reminders:
- Thank you for your thoughtful comments to my email inquiry. If you have not yet responded, please do so by today. As usual, the Deal teachers continue to impress me with your knowledge of your students and how to support them for success.
- Teachers, please continue to follow the attendance directive to make a phone call home to all students on their 1st day of non-excused absence. This also needs to be documented in STARS.
- The Deal Vision team will meet this Thursday at 3:30PM in the conference room. All interested teachers are invited to attend.
- Thanks to the teachers who attended the 6th grade transition meeting (Ms. Kinzer, Mr. Kirschenbaum, Mr. Brecher, Mr. Hughes, Ms. Sweeney, Ms. Hernandez - I'm sorry if I'm missing others!)
- Thanks to the teachers who attended the Apple presentation (Ms. Lerum, Mr. Mungai, Mr. McDowell, Ms. Washington, Ms. Mostoller, Ms. Wells, Mr. Mbayu, Ms. Hovanscek - I'm sorry if I am forgetting someone!)
Visitors from Valencia Middle School at deal on MondaySeveral school leaders from Valencia Middle School in Tucson, Arizona, will be visiting Deal on Monday, January 26th. While in town for an education conference, they have asked to see a school they have heard much about. The visit will run from 9 until 11; teachers should expect these visitors to walk the building to get a flavor for what happens here at Deal. Thanks for your support and cooperation in supporting other schools learn from what we do!
Braveheart Tours the Smithsonian Museum of American Art on Thursday
Classroom teachers are asked to excuse Braveheart students from classes on Thursday in order to allow them to tour the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Students will leave at 9:00 a.m. and return to school at approximately 2:30 p.m. A list of participating students has been distributed in staff mailboxes this morning. National History Day Help Today in Room 253
Students who need help with process papers, with performances, and with documentaries are invited to a special after-school tutorial this afternoon in room 253 from 3:30-4:30. After-School Chinese Club Starts this Week.
Attention students: Do you know that the Chinese New Year is today, January 26? Do you also know that it is the year of the ox? If you want to be a young China expert, come to the after-school Chinese Club.
It will meet every Tuesday from 3:30 - 4:30 pm in Room G4. Please see Ms. Wang for a permission slip.
