Teams, teachers, and departments presented a blinding array of student-support activities that are ongoing at Deal at the most recent Team Leader's Meeting. It is exciting and commendable that the Deal teachers take pride in their ability to help students in whatever ways they need. Parents, please be aware if your child is being recommended for an after-school remediation or support session, it helps greatly to have your encouragement and your positive voice to help make sure that the students attend. There will be a focus walk on Wednesday, February 11th during 4th period. Select staff will be observing specific instructional practices of their peers, then discussing and reflecting on those observations. Teachers: please be aware of the planned walk and continue your instruction as normal. An announcement will be made on the morning of the 11th to confirm the activity.

Soon, they will be designing individual lessons and both directly observing and videotaping the lessons. Each group of teachers will target particular instructional goals in the lesson and then review and refine the lessons afterwards. It is exciting to have so many teachers in the class participating in these important activities. The next class will be on Wednesday, February 11, at 3:30 pm.

Message from Principal Kim
|
|
As you may know, the Deal faculty worked collaboratively on writing a new mission statement to reflect our school values and purpose for being. From that work, two possible mission statements were developed. We shared them at the PTA meeting two weeks ago, we shared them at the LSRT meeting last Friday, and we will receive input this week from the student council. This morning, I am asking all HR teachers to share it with students as well. We are sharing the two mission possibilities with the larger Deal community so that you can comment.
The two options are:
1. Alice Deal Middle School educates our community with forethought, optimism, and rigor through a culture that strengthens individuality, citizenship, and excellence.
2. Alice Deal Middle School inspires excellence, curiosity, and compassion through intellectual and social engagement.
We are excited to coalesce around a mission statement this year as we embark on our new middle school journey as a full 6, 7, & 8 middle school!
Thanks to the entire Deal faculty and staff for your part in developing and commenting on this mission statement. A special thanks to Ms. Kinzer, Mr. Kirschenbaum, Ms. Hernandez, Mr. Geremia, Mr. Frye, and Ms. Neal for crafting the two choices for consideration. We welcome student and parent feedback!
Principal Kim

Pennies for Patients

MathCounts! Instead of playing outside on a warm winter Saturday morning, the Deal
MathCounts team spent the time attacking a lot of ingenious math
problems and appears to have beaten most, but not all, of the other
schools in DC at a recent city-wide competition.
According to unofficial reports from a source in the grading room at
the contest, the Deal team came in second place, behind St. Alban's
School for Boys, at a contest that featured teams from fifteen
different DC public, private, charter, and parochial schools. The
source said that Sidwell Friends school came in third place, followed
by Lafayette and St. Patrick's in fourth and fifth place.
Deal's Derek Levinson was the second-highest scorer in the entire
competition, losing by one point to a student from Jefferson Middle
School. Most of the top six students were from St.
Alban's, but it appears that Deal's Thuy Nguyen came in 7th place out
of well over 100 students who completely filled the Lafayette
Elementary School cafeteria. Nice work!
Brown Bag lunch on Building Self Esteem
A Brown Bag lunch on Building Self Esteem will be held during 4th period on Thursday, February 12 in the Counseling Suite. All 7th graders are welcome to sign up in the Counseling Suite at anytime. Cookies will be provided, but don't forget to bring your own lunch!
Team Braveheart Has a Very Busy Week Ahead
Please note the following schedule:
Braveheart students will work in small teams to improve DC CAS math skills during Periods 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 in the cafeteria on Tuesday. Teachers have received a list of students effected by this project. Sixty-five Braveheart students will enjoy a pizza party during Period 5 on Wednesday in room 253 to celebrate high and improved test scores on the last battery of DC BAS tests. Students will report to the party at the beginning of Period 5 and will be released to go outside (weather permitting) or to the cafeteria 20 minutes before the end of the period. Nice work, kids!
Rescheduled Field Trip to the Smithsonian Museum of American Art on Thursday Braveheart will travel on Thursday to study art at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. This trip was rescheduled as a result of inclement weather on January 29. Students will leave at 9:00 a.m. and return to Deal at approximately 2:30 p.m. Teachers should refer to the list of Braveheart students left in their mailboxes on Monday.
Green Scholars After School DCCAS Prep and Additional Tutoring Green Scholars are holding DCCAS prep and additional tutoring every Monday in room 109 and Thursday room 303 after school from 3:30 to 4:15 pm.
