Boys & Girls Summer Camp
Campers will participate in the arts, education, a healthy cooking class, sports, fitness, and recreation. In addition, we will have trips to the library, swimming, and field trips throughout the summer.
Camp will be from June 22nd-August 14th. The normal hours of operation will be 9am-4pm and before aftercare will be from 8-6. The camp fees will be $150 per two week session and $25 a week for before and after care.

Message from Principal Kim
The 8th grade promotional dance was beautiful and a ton of fun! Thanks to Ms. Sweeney and the many other teachers and staff members who helped to organize and support this celebration.
The celebration continues this week for 8th graders with the promotional ceremony this Thursday. We will begin seating for families at 9:30 am in Deal's gymnasium and begin the ceremony promptly at 10 am. After the promotion ceremony, the Deal PTA will host a small reception in the gallery with cake and drinks.
This will be the last weekly bulletin written for the 8th grade class -- you will be missed. I am so proud of your contributions and achievements. Take good care of each other in high school and don't forget to come back and tell us about how you are doing as you prepare to enter college in four very short years!

This week at Deal...
7th Grade Spanish Test
As mandated by the DCPS Office of World Languages, all Beginning Spanish students and Spanish Humanities 7th grade students will take a proficiency test on Monday and Tuesday of this week. They will be testing during their regular Spanish period. The test is online and measures student proficiency through multiple-choice, writing, and speaking questions.
Eighth Grade Locker Clean Out
Eighth graders will clean out lockers on Tuesday during first period.
Textbook collection!
All 8th graders should have returned their textbooks last week. This week we will begin collecting textbooks from 7th grade students. Students will have to pay for missing textbooks before records are released for the next year. Please make sure you bring your textbooks in to school!
Eighth Grade Promotion Rehearsal
Promotion rehearsals will start Tuesday during 6th and 7th periods. Please wait for an announcement to escort your 6th period class to the gymnasium.
7th Graders Going to Kings Dominion on Thursday
Students should report to school by 7:30 am on Thursday, June 11. Students should bring sunscreen, swimwear, towels, PG-13 DVDs for the bus ride, a sweater or sweatshirt for the bus ride, pocket money for food, games, souvenirs, and a good attitude. Please do NOT bring candy, gum, or electronics. Deal will not be responsible for theft or loss of any personal items. Students will return to Deal around 7:45 pm. Please be prepared to pick up your student at the school.
7TH GRADE ELL TRIP on Thursday
The 7th grade ELL students will be on an all-day field trip visiting educational sites on the National Mall. Please excuse their absence and allow them to make up any missed work.
4TH ANNUAL BIKES FOR THE WORLD BICYCLE COLLECTION A SUCCESS
On Saturday, May 30 Team United Nations collected donations of 51 bicycles, $519, and lots of bike parts and accessories for Bikes For The World. This year, like last year, the bikes will be sent to a partner organization in Uganda that helps needy women learn job skills and find employment and housing.
The ELL Department would like to thank Deal students Mohamed Ahmed, Max Smith, Anya Smith, A J Harris and his mom, Dona Harris, for volunteering and working so hard on Saturday, May 30 to prepare the bikes for the long journey to West Africa. |

On Tuesday morning at 8:10, all teachers of 8th graders should report to room 105 instead of to department meetings. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss logistics for the promotion ceremony on Thursday. ALL eighth grade teachers will have a role in helping the rehearsals and the event run smoothly.

Food for thought... for families this summer and beyond.
Ideas
for Family Writing Activities
"One
becomes a better reader by writing, and one becomes a better writer by
reading," say Kent State professors Timothy Rasinski and Nancy Padak in this
article in The Reading Teacher.
"Writing, like reading, is best learned when it occurs in authentic situations
and for authentic purposes." They make the case for working with parents
exploit the power of all kinds of writing at home. Here are some ways parents
can do this:
- Lists - Families make these all the time: shopping lists, to-do lists,
invitation lists, etc. Children could be encouraged to make lists of their own:
birthday wishes, chores, top-ten lists, etc.
- Notes - Rasinski fondly remembers the notes that his mother put in his lunch
box and notes that his father put under his pillow. Kids can be encouraged to
jot notes to family members and capture special moments in writing - saying
goodbye to grandparents after a summer vacation, the taste of a chocolate chip
ice cream cone, etc.
- Journals and diaries - "In the process of writing, journalers
often come to deeper understanding of their lives," say Rasinski and Padak.
"Moreover, the journal becomes a precious keepsake as the journaler continues
through life."
- Dialogue journals - These are a written conversation between a
parent and child, usually in a journal or notebook passed back and forth at
different times of day. This is a way for a parent to develop a deeper
relationship with a child - questions, answers, encouragements, apologies, and
words of affection can be written that might never be spoken.
- Letters and e-mails - These can help children stay in touch with
distant family members. Children get a kick out of getting a letter or e-mail
back.
- Birthday and special-event books - These are blank books in which family
members and guests at a birthday party or special event write personal notes or
wishes.
- Parodies - Families can enjoy writing spoofs of songs, poems, advertisements,
and other genres.
Rasinski and Padak close with
some suggestions for home-based writing that they have picked up over the
years:
- The
writing must be an authentic part of everyday life; it will lose its power if
it's seen as overly instructional.
- Parents
shouldn't be overly concerned with grammar and spelling. "Pointing out
children's shortcomings will discourage them from writing," say Rasinski and
Padak.
- It's
very helpful to have writing materials on hand - pens, pencils, colored
markers, paper, construction paper, staplers, etc.
